Cabin Grade Hardwood-is it worth it?

Cabin Grade Hardwood-is it worth it?

Cabin Grade flooring is the lowest grade of flooring available on the market today. It may have bubbles, knots, open cracks, splintered edges, partial tongues, and other imperfections in the wood. That doesn’t mean the boards are not made correctly, or are shattered or broken, it just means there may be some imperfections.

Hardwood flooring is graded based on how much of the natural characteristics of the real wood it contains, such as knots, color variations or mineral streaks in the planks. These grades range from an almost flawless, uniform floorboard, to boards full of flaws and variations. Cabin grade flooring is graded as the lowest quality, but it can still result in a beautiful floor at a fraction of the cost of premium grades.

This type of flooring is the least expensive grade of hardwood. The planks typically are shorter than other grades, with some boards as short as 24 inches. The hardwood planks are produced from the outer edge of the tree. At the inner core of a tree, the wood is prized for its quality and lack of imperfections. The closer you move to the outer edge, the more flaws and unique characteristics begin to show. It’s not uncommon to have to throw away some cabin grade boards because the amount of knots or cracks makes them unusable. Which is why your waste percentage has a higher count as opposed to your first quality hardwoods.

Cabin grade wood flooring is full of flaws but it’s favored by some homeowners because of these imperfections. The many flaws, such as color variations, burls, streaks, knots and worm holes, give cabin grade flooring a rough or rugged appearance. Some boards may show torn grains, burns or splits as well, which give the look of a well-loved floor. You certainly wont regret buying a cabin grade floor, especially if you are in the market of saving money. Is it worth it? I would say yes!
